We Learn To Rule
I turn the page and the room disappears. Now I'm inside the story... Paper flutters and shifts forms. Birds fly around me, circling, telling me to follow. A beautiful waterfall hanging down the sharp cliffs overwhelms the senses. Frolicking water gems glitter and glow. Frogs croak in the grasses surrounding this tranquil forest. Horses trot everywhere, drinking the fresh water spilling down the cliff face. Suddenly, the glen goes silent. Silent and still, as if a power cut has sapped all of its energy. The horses turn to stare at me. An army of creatures descends on the glen. Fear erupts. Hearts pound. Frantic thoughts. They surround me, circling me, sniffing me. I'm frozen and watching to see what they will do, whether they will attack. I look towards a minuscule one, pleading for mercy.
Then a large, scaly, sharp-toothed creature slithers out in front of the pack. No legs, dark blue eyes, darker than the depths of the ocean. "What are you?" it asks, rotten breath creeping over my skin.
"I am a human. What are you?" I respond.
"I am Cube. Leader of this pack. What are you doing here?"
"I am here because I fell into my story, though I've never fallen for a story quite like this before," I reply, shaking. The creature, Cube, reaches behind his back, arching his neck to get his knobbly staff.
"This is our land. You shall not come here again.'
He leans forward and taps his staff three times on my shoulder. Startled, I ask what he is doing and he explains that he is opening a portal, a portal to get me home. "But," he warns, "you have to go now or the magic won't hold." He points a sharp, spiky tail towards the dense forest. Leaping from the rock, I rush to find an escape. Flying for the trees, I swoop like a bird. Fingertips meet smooth bark. As I push, it starts separating into layers. Pushing through the layers, I emerge from the book. I look back. The book sits peacefully on the bed. The words glow softly on the spine and fade to black: 'We Learn to Rule'.
"That was amazing. Books are powerful," I whisper.
