Hearing Impaired Resource Base The Resource Base (Unit) for Hearing Impaired Children is attached to the junior school, but also helps children in the Infant School. The children all wear hearing aids or a speech processor if they have had a cochlear implant. In school they also wear a Radio Aid as this helps them to hear the teacher’s voice more clearly especially if the rest of the class is a bit noisy! At Manor the children learn to speak rather than use sign language as this helps them to communicate with other people and make friends more easily. The children come to the Resource Base everyday for a special language lesson, usually in a small group, but the rest of the time they spend in class. Usually, once a day, a member of the Resource Base staff goes into a lesson to help. At the moment there are 8 children in the Resource Base. Six of them are in the Juniors and two of them in the Infants. Mrs Brunson is the teacher in charge of the Resource Base. Mrs King is also a qualified Teacher of the Deaf. Mrs Stickland is the Senior Specialist Support Assistant and has recently gained a Foundation Degree in Learning Support. Mrs Chalmers and Miss Wenman are also Learning Support Assistants and work with our hearing impaired children in their mainstream classes. Some of us work full time and some part time.
