The School Day
Emergency school closures
The school may need to unexpectedly close in the event of severe weather, snow or an emergency in the school. Should this occur, information will be placed on the following websites:
Manor Junior school website - http://www.manorjunior.com
Hampshire County Council - https://www.hants.gov.uk/schoolclosures
Before school
We have a Breakfast Club on site. The Breakfast Club is open from 7:45 a.m. and costs £4.50 per session. This club runs during term time only. Applications are dealt with on a “first come, first served” basis.
The application form is available from the school office or on the website under Parents/Clubs. For further information, telephone Manor Junior School 01252 544072.
Start of the school day
The gates at the front and back of the school will open at 8.30 am and from this time parents and carers may walk their children round to the side playground where they will enter through the block doors which open at 8.35 a.m. Whilst it is good to be on time, please do not arrive earlier than 8.30 a.m. as we would like to avoid congestion outside the school. Parents are responsible for their children until they enter the school building at the start of the day. The school gates will be locked at 9.00 a.m. to keep the site secure during the school day.
Support staff will meet and greet pupils at the block doors and welcome them into the building. Teaching staff are unavailable to meet with parents at this time as they will be in the classrooms ready for the children as they arrive, however if you have an urgent message please feel free to speak to support staff on the door or to pop to the school office.
On Thursday 4th September, Year 3 class teachers will come out on to the side playground to walk their classes in. As the children settle in we will be encouraging them to walk themselves into the school building along with the rest of the school.
Block doors will open at 8.35 a.m. in readiness for the official start time of 8.45 a.m. Any child arriving after 8:45 a.m. will be marked late by the school office.
A record of late arrivals is kept by the school and the school will contact the parents of any child who is persistently late into school. If lateness continues to be a problem, the matter will be referred to the local authorities and legal procedures followed.
End of school
School finishes at 3.15 p.m. The front and back gate will open at 3.00 p.m. and parents can then proceed to the side playground to collect children. Pupils will be dismissed at 3.15 p.m. via the respective block doors to meet the adults collecting them on the playground. The back gate will be locked at 3.30 p.m. and the front gate will remain open for the After School Club.
If children are to go home with someone else, please email the class teacher in advance or inform the school office if it is an emergency change of pickup arrangements, and ensure your child is aware of who is collecting them. Equally, if your child is able to walk home alone, could you inform your child’s class teacher via e-mail.
In the interests of security and safety, parents are not allowed at any time to enter the school buildings, unless they have an appointment. Then this must only be via the main school office.
If a child is not collected at the correct time at the end of the day, he/she will wait outside the school office until collection. A member of staff will attempt to contact parents/carers to arrange collection.
After School Club
Parents who require childcare can apply for a place at our After School Club. This runs until 5.30 p.m. on school days and costs £8.00 per session. The application form, parent contract and Wraparound handbook is available from the school office or on the website under Parents/Clubs. Applications are dealt with on a “first come, first served” basis. For further information, telephone Manor Junior School on 01252 544072. We welcome ad hoc sessions as long as there is space available at the clubs and all the appropriate paperwork has been completed.
First Aid/Accidents
Our school has trained first-aiders who are able to deal with minor problems. In the event of a more serious accident or illness you will be contacted immediately, so please ensure that we have up-to-date contact telephone details on which you can be contacted during the school day.
If your child receives a bump to the head during the school day, then you will be contacted by a member of school staff. They will be given an orange wristband to wear for the remainder of the school day to alert adults to the fact they have had a bump to the head.
You can tell the school about changes to your contact details using the "change of contact form" which is available on the website under Parents/Useful Forms or from the school office.
Absence from school
If your child is absent from school due to illness, or for any other reason is unable to attend school, please inform the school on 01252 544072, or by email adminoffice@manor-junior.hants.sch.uk before 9.00 a.m. on the first day of absence. If we are not informed, then the absence will be recorded as unauthorised.
Please ensure pupils remain at home for 48 hours after the last bout of sickness or diarrhoea.
Doctor’s/Dentist appointments, where possible, should be arranged outside school hours.
If this is not possible then:
-
an email should be sent to school on the day before the appointment explaining the reason for the absence.
-
parents/carers should bring their child to / pick up their child up from the main school gate.
If your child is registered as a pupil at Manor Junior School, the school must give permission for absence; the education authority can take legal action against the parent if the child does not attend.
Items to bring in to school
-
Uniform – all items should be named.
-
PE kit – to be worn into school on PE days. All items should be named.
-
A pair of wellingtons / spare pair of old trainers and socks to be kept in school for use when participating in outdoor learning activities
-
A packed lunch, unless your child has school dinners. The online payment system can be used to pay for school meals. Access to this payment system will be provided when your child has started in this school. WE DO NOT ACCEPT CASH OR CHEQUES. Please contact us directly if there is a problem.

-
Children will be provided with stationery for lessons. If your child would like to bring their own pencil case and stationery from home, then they may do so, but this needs to remain in their school bag until their teacher says they can be used. The school cannot take responsibility for lost / damaged stationery items.
Please do not send your child into school with toys or games from home.
Mobile phones are not allowed in school. Your child will require written permission from school if you would like an exception to be made to this rule due to exceptional family circumstances. Please email adminoffice@manor-junior.hants.sch.uk to request permission.
Travel and access to the school
Car parking
Cars are not permitted on the school premises at any time.
If arriving at the school by car, please remember to park safely and considerately. Please be aware of parking restrictions on Fernhill Road as this road is monitored by Parking Wardens / Police.
Riding bicycles and scooters
Children may ride their bikes or scooters to school. Electric scooters are not allowed.
Please remember that:
-
Your child must wear a bicycle helmet when cycling to and from school.
-
Children should have a suitable cycle lock to secure their bicycle when at school.
-
The school is unable to accept responsibility for the safety of any equipment that is stored on site.
-
Cyclists and children on scooters must dismount and push their bikes when on school grounds.
Pets on site
Parents and carers are reminded that for the health, safety and welfare of all pupils, pets are NOT PERMITTED on the school site, even if carried by their owners or on a lead.
Smoking and vaping on site
There is a strict no smoking or vaping policy on the whole of the school site.
Mobile Phones
Parents are reminded that they should not use mobile phones while on the school site, with the exception of taking photographs for their own personal use at school events such as performances or certificate assemblies. Children need to be greeted by an adult who is present and interested in their day and mobile phones are a distraction from this.
School meals and packed lunches
School meals
Government policy currently entitles all infant school children to a free school meal. This does NOT apply to junior schools.
If you want your child to have a school meal, please ensure this is paid for in advance, using the online payment system. We regret that if payment is not received by the morning of the meal we will contact you to ask you to bring in a packed lunch.
If your child is going to be late and they have a school meal, please telephone before 9.30 a.m. to order their meal.
Please note: Unfortunately the school is unable to accept orders for school meals without payment. If payment is not received then you will need to bring in a packed lunch.
Hot dinners are currently £3.20 per day (£16 per week). Payment can only be made online via Scopay. If your child is in Year 3 you will be given your login details once your child starts in September (your child can still order a dinner on the day before your login details arrive). Free school meals are available to children whose parents/carers are in receipt of certain government benefits.
If you feel your child may be eligible please contact the school office or log on to the website: https://www.hants.gov.uk/educationandlearning/freeschoolmeals/juniorsecondary
Packed lunches
Packed lunches must be in a NAMED container. For healthy eating, a child’s lunch should be balanced and ideally include the following:
-
A portion of starchy food
-
Fresh fruit and vegetables
-
A portion of milk or dairy food
-
Small portion of lean meat, fish or alternative
-
A drink - fruit juice (not fizzy)

-
Chocolate / sweets
-

-
Fizzy drinks
School milk
Primary schools must provide the opportunity for all pupils to purchase milk to drink if they wish. If you would like to purchase milk on a daily basis for your child, please contact the school office.
For those families eligible for free school meals, the milk will be free of charge but you will still need to contact the school office and sign a form in order for your child to get their milk.

Named property is easily returned to its owner Unidentified items of property are placed in a lost property box located in the school corridor outside the hall entrance door. At the end of each term, unidentified items will be disposed of.
Hair/Earrings
Please ensure that:
-
Long hair is tied back (hair longer than shoulder-length).
-
Hair is not dyed.
-
Hair is checked regularly for head lice and appropriate treatment measures taken promptly.
-
Haircuts should not be ‘extreme styles’ e.g Mohican, contain tramlines etc. If you are unsure, please contact the school before the hair is cut.
-
Hair accessories should be royal blue, black or white only.
-
Stud earrings only.
Earrings must be removed for each session of PE / games. Children will not be able to take part in PE if they are unable to remove their earrings (taping over them is not a safe option). Please ensure your child is able to remove them without assistance.
If you are planning on having your child’s ears pierced the school recommends that this is done at the start of the summer holidays to allow for sufficient healing time before school restarts in September.
Communication
If you need to communicate with your child’s teacher, you can email them directly. Please note that emails will only be read and responded to in school operational hours and at an appropriate time when the teacher is not in class.
If your message is urgent then parents are welcome to contact the school by phone as an alternative.

Reading Record
Your child will be given a reading record at the start of the new academic year alongside their reading book. Please could you sign the book each time you hear your child read at home (ideally 5 times a week).
Letters/Emails home
All key letters are generally sent out by email. Please ensure that you keep the school updated of any change of email address and other contact information.
Food tasting/preparation
Throughout the school year, children are likely to undertake various food preparation / making / tasting activities. This is now part of the National Curriculum.
Please sign the general consent form to allow your child to participate in such activities. Please indicate clearly any allergies or medical conditions that we need to be aware of and notify the school of any changes to allergies throughout your child's time at the school.
Homework
Homework for all year groups will be based around children learning and becoming fluent with their reading, spelling and times tables. They need to practise these key skills each week. The children will be provided with log-on details for Oxford Reading Buddy, Times Tables Rock Stars and Spelling Shed so that they can log in at home and practice skills.
Half-termly projects will be set for all year groups.
In Year 6, additional SATs practice/revision tasks may be given.
The school subscribes to Times Table Rockstars and pupils can access this from a home computer or tablet. Pupils are encouraged to use this at home in order to improve their recall of their times tables.
If you encounter difficulties with overseeing aspects of your child’s homework, please speak to our Family Link Worker or the child’s class teacher.
Curriculum plans
An overview of the curriculum covered in each year group is available on the school website. If you require more detail then please contact your child’s teacher directly. Knowledge maps can also be found on the website and are a guide to important vocabulary and key facts that would be useful for your child to know before starting their topics.
School reports / parent consultations
We aim to communicate with parents on a regular basis to ensure each child is making appropriate progress and to agree support strategies if/as needed. Where possible, formal consultations are held twice a year and an annual written report is sent home to parents in the summer term. Further meetings may be held, particularly if your child has additional needs. We encourage all parents to attend these sessions and, if the official times are not manageable, you can contact your child’s class teacher to arrange a mutually convenient time.
Student Council / pupil voice
The school has a School Council that has two representatives from each class. They meet once per week to discuss any issues they feel are important. Elections will take place in your child’s class during the first half term. Children can put themselves forward for election if they have received no behaviour points / sanctions the previous term. We often re-elect student council members during the year in order to give a wider range of children the opportunity to represent the school.
There is a pupil post box in reception for pupils to share their ideas about the school.
Clubs and trips
Trips
Where possible, throughout the year the school organises field trips within the local community, such as walks to a local church. Rather than constantly asking for permission slips parents are requested to complete a general consent form.
Please note that you will be informed by letter of all trips scheduled. Outings involving a cost or coach transportation will need additional individual permission slips. If you encounter financial difficulties paying for such trips please contact the school office to see if the school can support or assist in any way.
Clubs
On a termly basis a letter will be sent home stating the clubs we are able to offer pupils. Please return the consent form promptly as we cannot accept forms that are returned late. You will receive confirmation of which clubs your child will attend, but please note that places at clubs are limited.
If your child is unable to attend a club on a particular day, please ensure that you inform the school. All children should be collected from after-school clubs via the main gate at the front of the school.
Behaviour
Key principles
At Manor Junior School, every child should feel safe, cared for and know that they belong. Strong, kind relationships between staff, pupils and families are essential and central to everything we do. We recognise and celebrate the fact that children are all different in their characters, personalities and abilities and we have high expectations for all. Self-regulation is learned and, like any other skill, is developed more quickly within some pupils than others. Pupils struggling to self-regulate are supported by staff to learn new ways to deal with uncomfortable feelings that do not interfere with the safety and learning of other pupils. Equally, pupils demonstrating skill in self-regulation, kindness and empathy for others are recognised and valued for their important contribution to the Manor School community.
Our School Rules
-
Ready
-
Respectful
-
Safe
-
Kind
Adults in school will:
-
Be emotionally consistent
-
Show interest in pupils as individuals to build strong relationships
-
Celebrate and recognise pupils making good choices and going ‘above and beyond’
-
Privately (whenever possible) redirect pupils who are not following the school rules.
Parents and Carers will:
-
Celebrate and recognise when their child has made good choices and gone ‘above and beyond’
-
Show interest in their child’s schooling
-
Respect decisions made by the school with regard to behaviour management
-
Share any concerns privately with staff members so they can be dealt with in school.
Pupils will:
-
Follow the school rules
-
Celebrate and recognise other children who have made good choices and have gone ‘above and beyond’
-
Share any concerns or worries with adults in school or at home
-
Be proud of their achievements.
Recognition
-
All classes have a recognition board on which they write up pupils' names who have shown the agreed class focus. Once a pupil's name is written on the board, it will not be removed until the end of the day. A name may be followed by one or two ticks if the child continues to demonstrate this behaviour. Pupils do not earn additional rewards for having their name on the recognition board, as the reward is the adult’s attention and recognition.
-
Positivity Postcards – all adults in school will give out an average of one postcard a day to a child they feel has gone ‘above and beyond’ in demonstrating the school rules.
-
Each adult in school will share positive verbal feedback with one pupil’s parents / carers each week. This may be in person on the playground or via a phone call home. In some circumstances, for example when a parent works and is not available to take a call, then an e-mail may be sent.
Rewards
-
Certificate assembly
-
Star of the week
-
Classpoints – classes can build points as a class which can be exchanged for a class reward.
Consequences
-
Two-minute conversation – at break / lunch / after school
-
Restorative conversation at lunchtime or after school (if pre-agreed with parent)
-
‘Natural’ consequence e.g. – tidy up mess / finish work at lunchtime / take work home to finish
-
Spending a lesson / morning away in another classroom. To be used for the benefit of the pupils in the home class and with agreement from a member of SLT.
-
Suspension – this will only ever be used after careful consideration by the Headteacher in line with the DfE and Hampshire Guidance.
