What exactly is the Resourced Provision?

The Resourced Provision caters for Hearing Impaired Children who have a moderate, severe or profound hearing loss. It spans both the Infant and Junior schools, taking children from 4 – 11 years. The Headteacher of the Junior School has overall responsibility for the Resourced Provision

Each child is included in mainstream as much as possible and identifies very clearly with their class. Withdrawal into the Resourced Provision for approximately an hour per day is arranged carefully to ensure the child is in a linguistically compatible group of similar aged children. The time is spent with a Teacher of the Deaf on developing the speech and language of each child mainly through a conversational style approach. This encourages natural communication strategies. Reading and writing skills are also taught.

A web of targeted support also exists for each Hearing Impaired Child within the class, either from a Teacher of the Deaf, a Specialist Teaching Assistant or a Communicator. Close liaison exists between the staff of the Resourced Provision and mainstream teachers to ensure that the child’s needs are being met.

The Aims of the Resourced Provision

In the Resourced Provision we aim to create the richest and most stimulating language environment possible to build their confidence which underpins every facet of learning, social interaction and personal development. In this way the deaf child will begin to acquire the necessary skills, qualities and sense of personal worth to carry him successfully into the demands and choices of adult life.

We offer mixed mode communication methods to cater for each individual child at any particular time. We recognise the language needs of the hearing impaired children may change over time and we are flexible in our approach to meeting individual needs.
